Meet Dr. Jim Lyles
Practicing in the field of orthodontics has given me a wonderful opportunity to change the lives of those around me in a profoundly positive way. Giving patients a straight smile is rewarding, but seeing the improvements in their self-esteem and confidence is a much more important gift. The relationships I have built over the years have meant so much to me, and I look forward to many more years of practicing in this amazing community.
I grew up riding horses and herding cows in a ranch in west Texas and was the oldest of three boys. I showed champion steers and lambs in the 4-H Club in McCamey while being active in the school band, photography, and church. Rodeoing and ranch life taught me the value of hard work.
Education and Experience
I began college at the age of 17 with two scholarships and majored in
Pre-Dental Medicine at the University of Texas. After completing my undergraduate
studies at UT, I continued with four years of dental school at the University of
Texas Dental Branch in Houston.
Following dental school, I entered private family practice for a short time
before the challenges of orthodontics lured me back to school for another three
years. During this time, I had two beautiful daughters and became thoroughly
trained as a father as well. And as if that wasn’t enough to keep me busy, I
also became a commissioned officer in the Air Force Reserve and served four
years with a MASH unit, completing my military service with the rank of Major.
After completing orthodontic training, I moved to the Houston North metroplex
where I continue to enjoy life and help people through orthodontics.Dr. Lyles on Google+
Several years ago, I assembled a group of exceptional restorative dentists and dental specialists with the purpose of continued growth and education in the field of dentistry. Obtaining and sharing the latest information and techniques along with the study and discussion of special and unusual cases has allowed me to provide the best and most up-to-date individual care for each of my patients.
I am also an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists and a past-president of the Houston Regional Society of Orthodontists.
In the Community
After seeing the tremendous difference in young people who are encouraged to develop their dreams and shoot for the stars, I became involved with the YMCA and served on the YMCA Camping Branch board for many years. I was honored to be awarded the Camp Cullen's Volunteer of the Year in 2005.
Continued growth and sharing is a way of life for me and I demonstrate this, not only in my local community but also in other parts of the world. I have been on three mission trips to remote areas of Belize where I, along with other dental professionals, delivered badly needed dental services and education to over 1,400 children.
TIME Magazine
I was nominated by my peers and chosen by Time Magazine as one of the Top 100 Doctors in Texas for 2012. Some of the criteria for this nomination include quality of care, treatment philosophy, quality of treatment results, integrity, and peer respect. This ranking includes doctors from all medical specialties and dental specialties in Texas and is a huge honor for me and our entire Smiles by Lyles family.
